On May 15, 1995, Kareem was enshrined in the Basketball Hall
of Fame. His legendary status within the game is solidified,
but his contribution to the game lives on.
Kareem’s retirement from the game
of basketball was only as a player, as a true fan and student
of the game his love and passion for the game is never-ending.
Kareem’s focus is now geared to passing his knowledge
and love of the game, which has given him so much, to the
next generation.
In 1999, Kareem served as an assistant
coach to Alchesay High School on the White Mountain Apache
Reservation. This was a particularly poignant role for Kareem
as it helped him delve deeper into both his fascination with
the Native American culture and his desire to help mold the
aspiring youths in the game.
Following his inspirational stint with
the kids of Alchesay High, Kareem began his first foray into
coaching in the NBA by accepting an assistant coaching position
with the Los Angeles Clippers. He followed that up with player
consultant roles with the Indiana Pacers and the Seattle Supersonics.
Perhaps Kareem’s greatest coaching achievement was when
he was the head coach of the USBL Oklahoma Storm. In only
his first year as coach, he lead the team to the USBL championship
title. Kareem’s success off the court has not gone unnoticed
as he was recently offered and accepted a position with the
New York Knicks as a player consultant/scout.
Since leaving the game Kareem has not rested on his laurels.
Whether it be through coaching, commentating, or through his
books, Kareem has maintained his indomitable spirit in sharing
with the world his passion. Kareem has become an established
author with an impressive body of work consisting of Giant
Steps, Kareem, A Season on the Reservation,
Black Profiles in Courage, and his most recent critically
acclaimed book Brothers in Arms. Kareem is also an
ardent student of history from reading about it, learning
about it, to compiling a most impressive collection of historical
artifacts.
And so the story of Kareem goes on with
each new chapter bringing a new challenge, a new feat to accomplish.
With the same determination that has brought him so much success
on the court, Kareem now uses that same resolve to face each
new day with the unwavering belief that the best is yet to
come.
