Darin Chavez began his career in entertainment as a lawyer, representing such clients as Miramax/Dimension, MTV Networks and various independent film producers for award-winning pictures such as “Whale Rider”, “Brokeback Mountain”, and the critically-acclaimed basketball documentary, “On the Shoulders of Giants.” In addition to repping producers, Mr. Chavez served as production counsel on such films as “Spy Kids”, “Criminal”, “Kill Bill vol.1 and 2”, “Sin City”, and “Doubt”, as well as on television productions, such as MTV’s “Punk’d” and “Newlyweds.” He is credited as an executive producer for packaging such television series as “Being Bobby Brown”, “HomeTeam” and “American Revolutionaries.”
As a sports lawyer, Mr. Chavez spent many years representing basketball players overseas, and is credited for closing naming rights deals, commercial endorsement and sponsorship arrangements with teams and players, and assisting in the formation of Argentina’s first basketball school, which has produced Olympic, National Team and professional basketball players. Mr. Chavez has represented the 1st pick in the NBA draft, among other current and former NBA players, coaches and management.
In the world of international brand licensing, Mr. Chavez has worked with clients such as Matt Groening Productions on “The Simpsons” publishing opportunities, Derek Drymond on the “SpongeBob Squarepants” property, and the various properties of Shogakukan Publishing and Entertainment (Japan’s largest publisher of Anime) including, MegaMan, Astraman, DekoBoko Friends, Hamataro and Detective Conan. He has closed international licensing deals with companies such as United Colors of Benetton, Target, Best Buy, WalMart, Mattel, Hasbro, Franco, Cherokee, EA, Konami, Allergan, Novartis, Panini, NBA, NFL, MLB, Nike, Adidas, Mohammed Ali and various other publishing, media, consumer goods, manufacturing and distribution companies.
Now practicing law at his own firm, Mr. Chavez continues to specialize in the representation of companies, producers, talent, athletes and visual artists in all areas of entertainment, licensing and endorsements. Some of his representative clients include basketball icon Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the legendary urban artist BUA, and production companies, such as Bento Box, ID Studios, Untitled, Scratch Lightning, Citizen Skull and CME/MediaPro Studios in Europe.
